Game Overview
Senjou no Ookami II (or Mercs outside Japan) is one of those classic top-down shooters where you control a squad of three commandos blasting through waves of soldiers and tanks. The Genesis version’s got both the original arcade mode and a beefed-up console-exclusive campaign—which is nice, because the arcade version’s over in like 20 minutes if you’re good.
You start off with just pistols, but grabbing power-ups turns your guys into walking arsenals. Flamethrowers, grenade launchers—the usual overkill. The squad mechanics are simple but fun, letting you split up or stick together depending on how reckless you feel. Just don’t get too attached to your teammates; friendly fire is very much a thing here.
It’s not the deepest shooter out there, but the chaos holds up surprisingly well. The extra Genesis mode gives you something to actually sink your teeth into.
