Senjou no Ookami II, known as Mercs in the West, came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990. It was developed and published by Capcom, a follow-up to the arcade hit that expanded the run-and-gun formula for home consoles. You control one of three commandos tasked with rescuing a kidnapped president from a hostile force. The game plays as a top-down shooter where you move screen by screen, mowing down soldiers, vehicles, and occasional bosses with an arsenal that grows as you play. You start with a simple pistol but quickly find weapon upgrades like machine guns, flamethrowers, and rocket launchers scattered throughout the stages. Friendly fire is always a risk, so you have to be careful not to hit your partners or hostages. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is high, demanding quick reflexes and smart positioning. It feels chaotic and urgent, like a small-scale war unfolding under your thumbs.
