Shadowlands_Disk1 is one of those Amiga RPGs that still sticks with me—mostly because of how it handled light. Or, more accurately, darkness. Your party of four starts off stumbling around in pitch black, relying on flickering torches to carve out tiny circles of visibility. Miss a hidden path? Too bad, you’ll never know it was there unless you inch forward, waving the torch like an idiot.

You can split the party up (which is either genius or a disaster waiting to happen), and there’s something satisfying about chaining spells together once you’ve scavenged enough of them. But the real tension comes from the torchlight mechanic—some monsters flee from it, others come running, and you’re never quite sure which is which until it’s too late. Sixteen levels of that, plus traps, secrets, and the constant fear of running out of light. It’s brutal, but in a way that makes every little discovery feel earned.
