Shanghai Pocket came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Sunsoft. It was one of the few digital adaptations of mahjong solitaire on the platform, offering a quiet, thoughtful alternative to the action heavy library of the time.
You control a cursor to select and remove matching pairs of mahjong tiles from a multi layered layout. The main goal is to clear the entire board without trapping any unmatched tiles. The game uses a simple but strict rule set; you can only select tiles that are free on at least one side, and the layout gradually collapses as you remove pieces. It moves at a deliberate, patient pace, and a single wrong move can easily lead to a dead end. Playing it feels like slowly untangling a very satisfying, very stubborn knot.
