Game Overview

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children: Yami no Sho is one of those GBA games that slipped under the radar, which is a shame—it’s basically Pokémon if it had demons, moral dilemmas, and way better writing. You still collect creatures, but instead of tossing balls at them, you’re bargaining with a pixie over whether she’ll join your team for some healing items or just mock you and run away.

The demon designs are these chunky, expressive pixel sprites that somehow make a floating eyeball or a grumpy oni look adorable. Combat’s quick but surprisingly deep—you’ll start off mashing attack, then realize halfway through that your fire-weak demon is getting wrecked unless you fuse it into something less flammable. And yeah, the story’s got actual stakes, not just “become the champion.” It’s still kid-friendly compared to mainline SMT, but there’s enough darkness here to keep things interesting.

Honestly, if you’ve got a GBA and like RPGs with personality, this one’s a no-brainer. Just don’t expect your demon negotiations to go smoothly every time.
