Tiny customizable robots—some beetle-shaped, others like little knights—battle on a grid where positioning matters as much as your weird weapon combos. Swapping their parts feels like being a mad scientist with a toolbox full of scrap metal.

Shingata Medarot: Kuwagata Version is one of those GBA games I stumbled onto years ago and still think about sometimes. It’s basically Pokémon if your team was made of tiny customizable robots—some look like beetles, others like little knights, and half of them have weapons strapped to places weapons shouldn’t be. The stag beetle-themed bots here (Kuwagata’s whole deal) are weirdly charming, especially when you start swapping their arms and legs like some kind of mechanical mad scientist.
Battles play out on a grid, so there’s actual strategy beyond just mashing attacks. I remember getting wrecked early on because I gave a robot a cool-looking cannon… that couldn’t hit anything two squares away. The pixel art’s got that chunky, early 2000s charm, and there’s something satisfying about watching your janky creations barely scrape through a fight. If you’ve ever lost an afternoon tweaking RPG gear stats, this’ll hook you in the same way—just with more screws and less swords.
Fair warning: the Kabuto version has different bots, so if you’re into collecting them all, good luck tracking down both. Either way, it’s a solid little tactics game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
