Game Overview

Shougi Saikyou came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Magical Company. It was one of the more serious shogi titles on the system, arriving late in the console's life when players expected deeper, more polished simulations. It doesn't try to be anything other than a straightforward, no-frills digital version of the board game.

You control your pieces from a top-down view of the board, planning moves against a computer opponent. The main goal is to checkmate the opponent's king, just like in standard shogi. The game's signature mechanics involve the unique rules of the game; you can drop captured pieces anywhere on the board as your own, which completely changes defensive and offensive strategies mid-match. The pacing is deliberate, demanding careful thought for each move, and the difficulty ramps up significantly after the early matches. It feels like a stern but fair teacher, rewarding patience and strategic foresight.
