Oh man, Bart vs. The Space Mutants is one of those weird early Simpsons games where you can tell they were still figuring out how to translate the show into gameplay. You run around as Bart trying to stop these purple aliens (who, for some reason, love the color purple) by spraying paint over their stuff or pelting them with your slingshot.

The controls are kinda stiff—expect to get stuck on platforms or miss jumps a lot at first. And good luck figuring out what you’re supposed to do without a manual; the first level’s all about spraying purple objects, but the game doesn’t exactly spell it out. Still, there’s something charming about how bizarre it is, especially when you realize you can knock out security guards with firecrackers. The soundtrack’s got that classic Genesis chiptune energy too.

It’s not the best Simpsons game out there, but if you’re into janky ‘90s platformers with weird mechanics, it’s a fun little time capsule.
