Your main goal is simply to survive each stage, collecting keys to progress and grabbing prizes like VCRs and toasters along the way. The signature mechanics are the constant shooting, the need to dodge in tight spaces, and the occasional power-up that lets you fire more bullets at once. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is high, especially with the NES controller making precise diagonal shots a challenge.
