Soccer Mania came out for the Game Boy in 2002, developed by Silicon Dreams Studio. It was part of that wave of handheld sports games trying to capture the feel of the bigger console titles, but with simpler graphics and mechanics. You could tell it was made for quick sessions, something to play on the bus or between classes.
You control a team of five players on a small, side scrolling field, passing and shooting to score goals. The main objective is to win matches in a tournament mode, working your way up through increasingly difficult national teams. Signature mechanics include a simple one button pass and shoot system, and the ability to perform sliding tackles to steal the ball. The pacing is fast, almost frantic, and the difficulty spikes noticeably against the later teams. It feels like a scrappy, condensed version of the sport where every possession matters.
