Play Son Son (Japan) Online
Control a monkey, run through stages, shoot fireballs at quirky enemies, and hop between floating islands in this classic NES side-scroller.
I first came across Son Son on the NES back in the day, a 1984 release from Capcom. It was one of those early side-scrollers that felt both simple and a little strange, not quite like the platformers or shooters that would define the system later on. The graphics were bright, the music catchy in that chiptune way, and it had this almost arcade-like immediacy that made it easy to pick up but tough to put down.
You control a small monkey character who runs automatically from left to right, and your main goal is to reach the end of each stage while fending off enemies. You shoot fireballs at floating pigs, squid-like creatures, and other odd enemies that approach from both sides. A big part of the game is hopping between floating islands; mistiming a jump means falling and losing a life. The screen scrolls continuously, so youโre always moving, always reacting. Itโs fast and can feel overwhelming at first, but once you find a rhythm, bouncing and shooting becomes almost hypnotic. Playing it feels like balancing on a narrow ledge between frustration and flow.
