Spirit of Excalibur picks up where Arthurian legends leave off—after the king’s death, when everything’s falling apart. You’re the regent trying to hold Camelot together, which mostly involves running around Britain convincing stubborn knights to stop sulking and rejoin the Round Table. Good luck with that—some of them won’t budge unless you send the right messenger or dangle the right bribe.
The real-time map feels like herding cats, with your groups wandering Britain while you frantically switch between locations. When something important happens—a knight finally agrees to talk, or you stumble into a trap—the game zooms into a side-view scene where you’ll fumble with items, argue with NPCs, and occasionally wonder why Lancelot is being so difficult again.
It’s got that same clunky-but-charming feel as War in Middle Earth, right down to the way Morgan LeFay’s schemes creep in while you’re busy putting out fires. Just don’t expect the knights to make it easy for you.
