Spirit of Excalibur came out in 1990 for MS-DOS, developed by Synergistic Software. It was one of those games that tried to do a lot at once, blending strategy, adventure, and role-playing elements during a time when PC games were often ambitious but not always polished. You don't just play as King Arthur; you manage his entire court and the fate of Britain.
You control a party of knights, moving them across a map of Britain, engaging in tactical combat, and making story choices that branch based on loyalty and betrayal. The main goal is to unite the kingdom and secure the throne, which involves recruiting allies, solving quests, and occasionally fighting screen by screen in side-view battles. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly due to the strategic layer and some unforgiving encounters. It feels like a dense, sometimes messy, but deeply engaging attempt to bring Arthurian legend to life through player decisions and consequence.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
