I picked up SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge for the Game Boy Advance back in 2001, a time when handheld games were really starting to get more detailed and colorful. THQ published it, and it was one of those early GBA titles that tried to capture the show's humor and energy in a side scrolling adventure. It felt right at home on the system, a straightforward platformer that didn't try to overcomplicate things.
You control SpongeBob, moving through levels set around Bikini Bottom. The main goal is to collect golden spatulas by exploring each area, defeating enemies like jellyfish with a giant glove slap attack, and solving simple environmental puzzles. You also gather health by drinking milkshakes and must occasionally douse yourself with water to avoid drying out in certain zones. The pacing is brisk, though some sections can feel a bit repetitive, and the difficulty has its spikes, especially in later stages. It feels like a faithful, if sometimes clunky, translation of the cartoon into a playable form.
