Game Overview

Man, Sports Illustrated for Kids on the Game Boy is way more fun than it has any right to be. I picked it up expecting some basic kiddie sports game, but it’s actually a solid little collection of mini-games—basketball, track, golf, even football. The controls are simple (just A and B buttons doing most of the work), but timing your shots or nailing the perfect sprint takes some practice.

The graphics are bright and cartoony, with these little chibi-style athletes that somehow make running the 100-meter dash feel intense. My favorite’s probably the basketball mode—there’s something weirdly satisfying about nailing three-pointers with that tiny pixel ball. And yeah, it’s obviously not Madden, but that’s the charm. You can play a full round in like five minutes, which is perfect for bus rides or waiting for your turn at the dentist.

If you’ve got a soft spot for retro handhelds or just want something light between bigger games, this one’s a surprisingly good time. Just don’t blame me when you start obsessing over beating your high score in the long jump.
