Kemco released Spy vs Spy: Operation Boobytrap for the Game Boy in 1992, a time when portable multiplayer was still a novelty. It was based on the MAD Magazine comic strip, and it translated the spies' rivalry into a competitive two player experience. You could play alone against the computer, but the real draw was linking two Game Boys for head to head sabotage.
You control either the Black Spy or the White Spy, moving screen by screen through a multi room embassy to find and collect five items needed to escape. The real game is setting traps on doors, drawers, and ladders; placing a bomb or a spring and then hoping your opponent triggers it. The pace is tense and deliberate, full of bluffing and backtracking as you try to complete your objective while avoiding the other player's devious setups. Outsmarting someone in real time with a link cable feels brilliantly personal and chaotic.
