Mike Jones explores tropical islands, solves puzzles, and battles monsters to rescue his uncle.

StarTropics is one of those NES games that starts simple—just a kid with a yo-yo exploring a tropical island—but quickly pulls you into something deeper. The first time I talked to Chief Coralcola and realized my uncle was missing, it felt like the game shifted from cheerful to quietly unsettling.
You move through villages, caves, and ruins, bouncing between light puzzles and combat that’s straightforward but satisfying. The yo-yo is a weird weapon, but it works, and finding new gear like the baseball bat makes fights feel less desperate. The island has this odd mix of bright colors and eerie moments, like when you stumble into a cave full of enemies and the music changes.
Some of the dungeon layouts can be frustrating—blind jumps, hidden switches—but figuring them out gives that old-school NES satisfaction. StarTropics isn’t just about rescuing your uncle; it’s about uncovering the strangeness of the island piece by piece.
