Steel Empire came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Hot-B. It was a time when the GBA library was full of ports and original shooters, and this one stood out for its distinct visual style and steampunk setting. You pilot either a sturdy airship or a quick fighter plane, weaving through enemy formations and dodging bullets from steam-powered dreadnoughts and biplanes. Your main goal is to survive each stage, defeat the boss, and push further into enemy territory. Signature mechanics include switching between two weapon systems on the fly (a standard shot and a more powerful, limited special weapon) and collecting power-ups to enhance your firepower. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can be tough but fair, demanding good reflexes and smart positioning. It feels great to blast through mechanical enemies and watch them break apart in satisfying, chunky explosions.
