Game Overview

Remember when handheld football games were all about fast, messy fun instead of hyper-realistic graphics? Steven Gerrard’s Total Soccer 2002 on the GBA nails that old-school vibe—you’ll be sliding into tackles and smashing in goals within seconds of picking it up. The controls are stupidly simple (just two buttons and the D-pad), but there’s something weirdly satisfying about how the ball pings around the tiny pitch.

It’s got Gerrard’s name slapped on it, but don’t expect a deep career mode or anything. What you get are quick matches where the goalkeepers flail at shots like they’re swatting flies, and every through-ball feels like a lottery ticket. I lost an embarrassing amount of time to the tournament mode, mostly because matches are so short you keep telling yourself “okay, one more.”

If you’ve got a soft spot for janky early-2000s sports games or just want something to play between bus stops, this cartridge still holds up. Just maybe don’t expect FIFA.
