Street Gangs, known in Europe as River City Ransom, came out for the NES in 1989. It was developed by Technos Japan and published there by Taito. The game arrived late in the NES lifecycle, a time when developers were pushing the hardware with more complex mechanics and cooperative play. It stood out for blending beat 'em up action with light RPG elements, a combination not yet common in the genre.

You control either Alex or Ryan, two high school students fighting through urban territories to rescue a kidnapped girlfriend. The main objective involves moving screen by screen, defeating gang members to earn cash, and eventually confronting rival leaders. Signature mechanics include buying food and items from shops to permanently upgrade your character's stats, and learning special moves by finding skill books hidden in certain locations. The pacing is brisk, with constant enemy encounters, and the difficulty can spike sharply during boss fights. It feels scrappy and improvisational, like a street fight where every dollar earned or sandwich eaten might just turn the tide.
