Game Overview
Street Smart is one of those early Sega Genesis fighters that feels rough around the edges now, but there’s something weirdly charming about it. You play as "Karate Man" (yes, really), bouncing between cities to punch your way through a tournament. The side-scrolling brawler setup is simple—dodge, kick, jump—but the crowds cheering at the edges make it feel like a street fight, not just another arcade port.
What I like about the Genesis version is the betting system. Between fights, you can gamble your winnings on the next match (risky, but satisfying when it pays off). The cash lets you tweak your stats, which actually matters because the AI gets brutal fast. Oh, and there’s a desperation super move that costs health—great for last-second comebacks, though I mostly whiffed it.
Shame the two-player co-op got cut in later releases, but the Vs mode is still a blast if you’ve got a friend willing to endure the janky hitboxes. It’s not Street Fighter, but it’s got its own weird personality.
