Super Monaco GP was my go-to racing game back in the Genesis days. It nails that early F1 vibe with the 1989/90 season cars and tracks, but what really hooked me was how it balanced arcade fun with just enough sim elements to feel authentic without being overwhelming.
You start off in arcade mode blasting past AI cars that actually put up a fight, but the real meat is the championship mode. Two full seasons of racing where you earn better cars by placing well—I remember grinding races just to upgrade from that sluggish starting vehicle. The Monaco track in particular still gives me flashbacks; one wrong turn and you're kissing the guardrail.
It's aged surprisingly well for a 16-bit racer. The sense of speed when you hit a straightaway and the way the cars actually feel weighty in corners? Pure magic for its time. Still holds up if you're into retro racing games.
