Command a squad of customizable mechs in grid-based battles, pulling off flashy combo attacks while dodging enemy reinforcements. The anime-style drama and ridiculous weapon animations make every fight feel like a spectacle.

Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 is one of those GBA games I keep coming back to—even years later, the tactical robot battles just don’t get old. You start off with a small squad of mechs, each with their own ridiculous arsenal (think shoulder-mounted railguns, plasma swords, and the occasional "surprise" orbital cannon). The first few missions ease you in, but by the time you’re juggling combo attacks and positioning your units to block enemy reinforcements, it gets seriously addictive.
What I love is how the game doesn’t assume you’ve played a dozen other Super Robot Wars titles. The story’s completely standalone, full of anime-style drama and rivalries between pilots who all somehow have spiky hair. And the attacks? Every special move has these over-the-top animations—like watching a tiny GBA screen barely contain the explosion from a mech’s "final annihilation beam."
It’s not just about brute force, though. You’ll waste turns (and repair costs) if you charge in blindly. Some enemies dodge long-range shots unless you corner them, others counter melee attacks brutally—figuring out the quirks of your squad is half the fun. By the end, you’ll have favorites, and yes, you’ll absolutely resent whoever let the pink-haired pilot’s robot get wrecked in mission 7.
If you like strategy games with personality—and robots that fight like they’re in a Saturday morning cartoon—this one’s still a blast.
