Play Super Rugby (Japan) Online

You pass, kick, and shove through pixelated scrums—somehow this clunky NES rugby game nails the chaos of a last-minute try. The ball bounces weird, tackles feel heavy, and those blocky animations just work.

Game Overview

Super Rugby for the NES was released in 1990, developed by Rage Software and published by Virgin Games. It arrived late in the console's life, a time when many developers were pushing the 8-bit hardware with more ambitious sports titles, though this one kept its approach fairly straightforward.

You control a team of fifteen players, cycling through them to pass, kick, and tackle in an effort to advance the ball down the field and score tries. The game uses a side-scrolling perspective that shifts as you move, and you must frequently ruck for possession after a tackle. The pace is methodical, almost sluggish, which makes breaking through the defensive line feel genuinely earned. It captures the grinding, physical struggle of rugby surprisingly well through its simple mechanics.
