Super Star Force is that rare NES sequel that actually improves on the original—if you can track down a copy. Tecmo took the solid foundation of Star Force and cranked up the speed, added wild new power-up mechanics, and threw in these insane screen-filling boss battles that feel way ahead of their time for 1986.
The first few minutes feel familiar if you've played the first game—your little ship zipping around, picking off geometric enemies—but then you start noticing the little tweaks. The power-up system's deeper, with these temporary screen-clearing bombs that feel amazing when you time them right. And those late-stage bullet patterns? Brutal, but in that satisfying "one more try" way.
Shame it never left Japan officially. The Famicom version's got this great metallic blue cartridge that looks slick next to the original's yellow. Definitely worth digging up if you're into classic shooters.
