Swamp Thing for the NES came out in 1992 from Imagineering Inc., a time when licensed games were a real mixed bag on the console. It was based on the darker DC Comics character, which already set it apart from the more common superhero fare of the era.
You control the Swamp Thing himself, moving through side-scrolling levels that change themes from murky bogs to frozen wastelands. Your main goal is to fight through these areas, using a punch attack and a slower, longer-range vine whip to defeat various mutants and monsters. The game is structured screen by screen, and you often have to clear all enemies to proceed. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is notoriously unforgiving due to stiff controls and enemies that can hit you from off-screen. Making progress through its clunky combat requires a lot of patience and memorization.
