Tail Gator is one of those classic Game Boy games that’s way more fun than it has any right to be. You play as Charly, an alligator with a serious tail-whip game, trying to save Moberry from a dragon warlord named Basso Gila. The levels are split into five areas—jungle, caves, underwater, you name it—and you can tackle them in whatever order you want, which is nice when you hit a tough spot and need a break.
Most of the time, you’re just smacking enemies with your tail (the longer you hold the button, the stronger the swing) and dodging hazards while hunting for treasure chests. The chests give you random stuff—extra health, screen-clearing bombs, or sometimes just points—but the last one always has the key to finish the level. Boss fights are simple but satisfying, especially when you figure out their patterns.
It’s not super deep, but there’s something weirdly addictive about bouncing between levels and trying to clear them all. The underwater stages are the worst, though—just saying.
