Tecmo Bowl on the Game Boy came out in 1991, developed and published by Tecmo. It was one of the few football games you could carry around back then, a simplified version of the NES original that fit right in your pocket. The graphics were basic, even for the time, but it was football on the go, and that was enough.

You control either the offense or defense, picking from a small set of plays before each snap. As the quarterback, you drop back to pass or hand off to a running back, trying to move the ball downfield screen by screen. On defense, you select a defender and attempt to tackle the ball carrier or intercept a pass. The game moves quickly, with short quarters and straightforward mechanics, though the AI can be surprisingly tough on defense. It feels like a stripped-down, frantic version of football where every yard matters.
