Tecmo Bowl came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published by Tecmo. It was one of the early football games on the console, a time when sports simulations were just starting to find their footing in the home market.
You control a team of eleven players, but you only directly handle the quarterback on offense or a single defender after the snap. The main goal is to outscore your opponent by moving the ball down the field, either running it or passing it. Signature mechanics include selecting from a limited set of plays before each down and, after the snap, trying to evade tacklers or complete a pass to one of your receivers. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike sharply against the computer's better teams. It feels immediate and chaotic, a game where a single broken tackle can turn the entire play around.
