Game Overview

Tecmo Super Bowl came out on the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by Tecmo. It was one of the defining football games for the system, arriving at a time when sports titles were just starting to feel more like the real thing. You could play a full season, manage rosters, and it had the official NFL license, which was a big deal back then.

You control all eleven players on the field, switching between the quarterback for passes and whoever has the ball for running plays. The main goal is simple: outscore your opponent. A couple things made it stand out. The playbook was full of unique, overpowered plays for certain stars, and the turbo button let your players burst into a full sprint. Games are fast and the difficulty can spike, especially against the computer's relentless offense. It feels immediate and chaotic in the best way, like you're always one broken tackle away from a touchdown.
