Tonjan! is a Japan-only release for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Taito. It came out in the late 80s, a time when the NES library was full of experimental and often brutally difficult platformers, and this game fits right into that niche without much fanfare.

You control a small, agile character navigating a series of disconnected, single-screen stages. The main goal is simply to survive each screen's specific, often bizarre, hazard and find the exit, which might be a door, a warp, or just moving off the edge of the stage. The mechanics shift constantly; one stage has you bouncing on clouds to gain height, another has you carefully timing jumps over instant-death spikes while being pursued, and many require quick reactions to enemy patterns that fill the screen. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty is steep, with little room for error. It feels like solving a rapid-fire puzzle where the pieces are trying to kill you.
