Game Overview

Ultima IV is one of those rare RPGs where being a decent person is the whole point. Instead of chasing loot or grinding levels to slay some big bad, you're trying to embody eight virtues—things like compassion, honesty, and courage. The game actually tracks whether you're living up to them, which makes simple choices surprisingly tense. Overpay a blind beggar? That's compassion. Flee from a fight? There goes your valor score.

You start by answering moral dilemma questions that determine your character class—I got stuck as a shepherd at first because apparently I valued humility too much. The world feels alive in a way few RPGs did back then, with NPCs you can actually talk to by typing keywords. Want gossip about the local lord? Just ask about "justice" or "rumors."

Combat's still there, with first-person dungeon crawls and top-down overworld fights, but it's almost secondary. The real challenge is figuring out how to prove you're worthy of becoming the Avatar—like donating blood to show sacrifice or returning lost items instead of pocketing them. It’s weirdly refreshing to play an RPG where stealing everything not nailed down makes you worse at your job.

The FM Towns version sharpens the chunky Amiga graphics, but either way, this is the game that made Ultima more than just another fantasy series. You’ll either love the moral puzzle of it or miss the mindless dungeon looting—no judgment either way.
