Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny picks up right where the last game left off—except now, everything’s gone sideways. Lord British is missing, and some guy named Blackthorn has taken over, twisting the virtues you worked so hard to uphold into a brutal dictatorship. The world feels heavier this time, more alive. Shopkeepers actually close up at night, NPCs have schedules, and you can even sit in chairs (which, okay, sounds silly until you realize how rare that was in 1988).

Combat’s still turn-based, but the dungeons switch to this weird 3D view with a spinning compass that takes a minute to get used to. And good luck with the Shadowlords—they’ll randomly show up in towns, turning friendly folks into panicked thieves or outright attackers. You’ll spend a lot of time deciphering runes, pushing around objects (because why not?), and trying not to get lost in the massive Underworld.

It’s darker than Ultima IV, both in story and tone, but the world’s way more detailed. You’ve got magic carpets now, which are as fun as they sound, and the spell system still makes you hunt down reagents like some kind of fantasy chemist. Just don’t expect to barge into a shop at midnight—they’re closed, and the shopkeeper’s probably asleep.
