Game Overview
UMS is one of those deep, sprawling war sims that tries to do everything—ancient battles, sci-fi clashes, you name it. I remember booting it up on my Amiga and immediately getting lost in the layers: zooming in to see individual units scrapping it out, then pulling back to watch entire battlefields unfold. Gettysburg and Hastings are here if you want historical fights, but half the fun was cooking up weird matchups (spearmen vs. laser tanks, why not?).
That said, don’t expect naval battles—it’s all land-based, and the lack of fog of war means you’ll always see everything coming. Still, there’s something satisfying about how granular it gets. They must’ve done something right, since it got a sequel later on.
