Undercover Cops on the Game Boy was a portable adaptation of the arcade beat 'em up, released by Irem in the early 1990s. It arrived during a period when many developers were trying to translate the energy of coin-op brawlers to the handheld's small screen, often with mixed results. This version tried to capture the same gritty, urban brawling of its bigger brother, but with the expected limitations of the hardware.
You control one of three undercover officers, each with slightly different attacks, and fight through waves of street punks and bosses across several city stages. The main objective is straightforward: move from left to right, punch and kick every enemy that appears, and survive until the end of the level. Signature mechanics include picking up weapons like pipes or knives dropped by foes, and executing special moves that drain a bit of health but clear the screen. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep, with enemies quickly swarming from both sides of the screen. It feels like a constant, frantic scramble where every hit counts.
