Game Overview

Virtual Pool 64 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by Celeris and published by Interplay Entertainment. It was one of the few serious pool simulations on the console, arriving at a time when many players were looking for more realistic sports experiences alongside the usual action and platform games.

You control the cue stick from an overhead view, carefully positioning it with the analog stick to set up each shot. The main goal is to clear the table according to standard pool rules, either against computer opponents or a friend in two-player mode. Key mechanics include applying English to the cue ball for spin and positioning, judging bank shots off the rails, and planning several moves ahead to avoid leaving easy shots for your opponent. The AI can be unforgiving, especially in later matches, demanding precision and strategy. It feels satisfying when a well-planned shot drops exactly as intended, though a small mistake can quickly turn the game around.
