Volfied came out for the Sega Genesis in 1989, developed and published by Taito. It was one of those games that felt right at home on the system, a clever twist on the Qix formula that offered something a little different from the platformers and shooters dominating the scene at the time.
You control a small triangular ship, moving around the perimeter of a blacked-out screen. Your goal is to claim territory by drawing lines across the playfield, slowly revealing the colorful image hidden beneath. Enemy creatures patrol the uncovered areas, and if they touch you or your line while you're drawing, you lose a life. The real tension comes from balancing speed against safety; larger claimed areas yield more points, but leaving your line exposed for too long is incredibly risky. The shield energy constantly drains, adding a persistent urgency to every move. It feels like a tense game of territorial cat and mouse where every decision matters.
