Choose a Trooper, fight through levels, punch and kick robots, and take down bosses in this side-scrolling beat 'em up from 1995.
I picked up VR Troopers for the Sega Genesis back in 1995, a game developed by Sega and based on the live-action kids show. It was one of those licensed titles that felt pretty typical for the era, a side-scrolling beat 'em up that tried to cash in on the show's popularity without doing anything too ambitious. You could choose between the three main Troopers, each with their own slightly different moves, and the whole thing had that very mid-90s Sega look and sound.
You control one of the Troopers, moving from left to right through each stage to punch and kick your way through Grimlord's robot armies. The main objective is just to get to the end of each level and defeat the boss waiting there. The signature mechanics are pretty straightforward: you have a basic attack combo, a jump, and a special screen-clearing move that drains your health bar if you use it. The pacing is fast and a little messy, with enemies swarming in from both sides, and the difficulty can feel cheap sometimes due to awkward hitboxes. It feels like a rushed afternoon playing a forgettable arcade game, but it has a certain clunky charm if you're a fan of the source material.
