Game Overview
Wally Bear and the NO! Gang is one of those weird, well-meaning NES games that tried to teach kids about saying no to drugs—while also being a side-scroller where you punch gang members in the face. You play as Wally, a bear whose parents send him on a mission to gather his friends (the "NO! Gang," obviously) and make it to his uncle's house for a party. Along the way, you dodge sketchy characters offering you drugs and beat up thugs with your tiny bear fists.
The whole thing feels like an after-school special crossed with a janky platformer. The controls are stiff, the graphics are basic, and the anti-drug messaging is about as subtle as a brick to the face. But there's something oddly charming about how seriously it takes itself. You'll jump over syringes, collect "NO!" power-ups, and occasionally wonder what kind of party Wally's uncle is throwing that requires this much effort to get there.
It's not a great game by any stretch, but if you're into weird retro oddities or want to see how the '90s tried to scare kids straight, it's a fascinating time capsule.
