Play Water World Online
Pilot a clunky little sub through murky Game Boy waters, dodging mines and torpedoes while creepy fish-monsters try to ram you—controls feel weird at first, but weaving through coral tunnels gets satisfying fast.
Okay, so Water World on the Game Boy—this weird little underwater shooter that somehow slipped under the radar back in the day. You’re basically piloting this tiny sub through these murky pixel oceans, dodging mines and torpedoes while these creepy fish-monsters try to ram you. The controls take a second to click (why does "up" make me dive deeper?), but once they do, it’s oddly satisfying weaving through coral tunnels and blasting enemy subs with your dinky little torpedoes.
The music’s got that classic Game Boy vibe—all bleepy and urgent—and the levels get seriously mean after the first few. One minute you’re casually exploring, the next you’re getting ambushed by a screen-filling eel. It’s not perfect (good luck seeing some enemies against the dark blue backgrounds), but there’s something charming about how ambitious it feels for a handheld game from 1992. If you’ve ever wondered what Metroid might’ve looked like as a submarine game, here’s your answer.
Just don’t expect it to go easy on you.
