Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ’98 is basically the N64 hockey game you remember from the year before, just with slightly updated rosters and stats. Not exactly a revolution, but hey—if you loved the original, this is more of that.
You’ve got two ways to play: arcade mode, where penalties don’t exist and you can unleash a ridiculous power shot, or simulation mode, which tries to be a little more realistic (though it’s still way faster than most hockey games). Exhibition matches are great for quick sessions, but there’s also full seasons and playoffs if you want to commit. And yeah, all the real NHL teams and players are here—26 of them—so you can finally settle that debate about whether the ’98 Red Wings could take the Avalanche.
It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s solid, fast hockey with just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
