Play Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98 Online

Pick arcade mode for wild slap shots and no rules, or go simulation for slightly more realistic (but still chaotic) hockey with all the '98 NHL teams. Same great gameplay as the original, just with updated rosters.

Game Overview

Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98 came out in 1997 for the Nintendo 64, developed by Midway Games. It was part of that wave of early 3D sports titles that tried to capture the speed and physicality of arcade hockey, leaning into exaggerated action rather than strict realism. On the N64, it stood out for its smooth frame rate and over the top style, fitting right in with the console's emphasis on multiplayer fun.

You control a team of five players, skating up and down the rink trying to score more goals than the opponent. The main objective is straightforward, win the game, but how you get there is pure chaos. Signature mechanics include the ability to charge up slap shots for explosive power, body checking opponents with enough force to send them spinning, and even breaking the glass with a particularly hard shot. The pacing is fast, almost frantic, with very little downtime between plays. It feels like controlled mayhem, a game where every shift could end with the puck in the net or a player flat on the ice.
