Whac-a-Critter (Unl) is one of those weird little Genesis games that feels like it was made in someone’s basement—in the best way possible. It’s basically whack-a-mole, but with these janky little critters popping out of holes at ridiculous speeds. Your mallet moves just slow enough to make every miss feel like your fault, which is either hilarious or infuriating, depending on how competitive you are.
The sprites are charmingly ugly, the sound effects are borderline obnoxious, and sometimes the critters glitch in ways that shouldn’t work but somehow do. It’s the kind of game where you’ll yell “Oh come ON” at the screen within five minutes, then immediately hit restart. If you’ve got a soft spot for janky, unofficial retro stuff, this is a weird little time capsule worth smashing your way through.
