I picked up Whac-A-Mole for the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a portable version of the arcade staple published by TDK Mediactive. It was a simple, straightforward game for a system loaded with deeper adventures, something you could play in short bursts between classes or on a quick commute. It didn't try to reinvent the cabinet experience, just shrunk it down to fit in your pocket.

You control a mallet, tapping the A button to swing at moles that pop up from nine holes. The main goal is to rack up points by hitting the regular moles while avoiding the ones that will cost you, like the bomb moles that end your turn. The moles speed up relentlessly, and special types mix things up; some grant score multipliers, while ninja moles duck back down almost instantly. The puzzle modes, like a mole-based tic-tac-toe or a chain reaction mode where each hit spawns new targets, offer a decent break from the frantic main game. It's a test of pure, simple reflexes that feels satisfyingly chaotic when you get into a rhythm.
