Whip Rush came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, published by Renovation Products. It was one of those many shooters that filled the library back then, not a huge standout but a solid entry if you were looking for something to play through on a weekend. You pilot a ship through seven stages of alien landscapes and mechanical fortresses. Your main goal is to survive the onslaught and take down the boss at the end of each area. Your ship has a unique rotating claw weapon that can be used offensively to crush smaller foes or defensively to block incoming fire. You collect power-ups that change your main shot, like a spread or laser, and a separate speed control lets you adjust your movement pace on the fly. The game moves at a brisk clip and the difficulty is fair but persistent, demanding quick reflexes and smart use of your claw. It feels responsive and tactical, a shooter that rewards careful positioning as much as aggressive firing.
