Game Overview
Whirlo is one of those SNES platformers that feels familiar but has its own weird charm. You play as Xandra—Valkyrie’s lizard buddy—before they ever teamed up, just a little guy with a pitchfork trying to save his family. The controls are simple: jump, stab, and occasionally cling to walls with your fork like some kind of reptilian lumberjack.
The levels are full of those classic SNES hazards—spikes, pits, enemies that exist solely to annoy you—but the pitchfork adds a fun twist. You can’t upgrade it or unlock spells like in Valkyrie’s games, which keeps things straightforward (if a little barebones). The coins you collect feel almost pointless at first, until you realize they’re basically your only way to stock up on extra lives.
It’s not the deepest platformer out there, but there’s something endearing about Xandra’s little adventure. You can tell it’s building toward something bigger—especially when Valkyrie finally shows up.
