World Cup Soccer came out in 1989 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games lineup, published by Virgin Games. It was one of those early soccer titles you'd load up from a floppy disk, a simple but engaging take on the sport before the era of hyper realistic graphics and deep simulation.
You control a team of players, moving them around the field with the arrow keys and passing or shooting with the action buttons. The main goal is to score more goals than the opponent, either against the computer or a friend in two player mode. Two mechanics stand out: the sudden shift to a close up, slightly awkward 3D view when taking a shot on goal, and the frantic scramble for positioning during set pieces like free kicks. The pace is fast, the controls are responsive but straightforward, and matches feel quick and competitive. It captures the excitement of a back and forth match with a focus on immediate action rather than complex strategy.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
