XDR – X-Dazedly-Ray is one of those classic Sega Genesis shooters that feels like Gradius cranked up a notch. You start with a basic pea-shooter of a ship, but after blasting through a few waves of enemies, you grab power-ups that actually make you feel dangerous—like the spread shot that turns your tiny fighter into a wall of bullets.
The levels throw weird sci-fi landscapes at you—floating bio-mechanical fortresses, asteroid tunnels that force you to dodge tight gaps—and each one ends with a boss that’s either a screen-filling monstrosity or something with way too many tentacles. There’s a decent challenge curve, too; Normal mode feels fair, but Hard will have you sweating by stage three. It’s the kind of game where you’ll replay levels just to nail the perfect weapon combo.
Six stages might not sound like much, but they’re packed with enough surprises to keep you coming back.
