Xenophobe came out on the NES in 1988, a port of the Bally Midway arcade game. It was part of that wave of games trying to bring a more frantic, arcade style of play home, where you were just as likely to be overwhelmed as you were to feel powerful. It didn't try to be an epic adventure; it was a straightforward, tense fight for survival.

You control an astronaut exploring a multi-level space station infested with hostile aliens. Your main goal is to clear each room of creatures, find the exit, and move on before the station's self-destruct sequence finishes. The signature mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration, where you blast aliens and can even retreat to a safe, top-down map view to catch your breath. You find better weapons, like flamethrowers and grenade launchers, to deal with the increasing threats. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty comes from being swarmed from vents and ceilings, forcing you to constantly be on the move. It feels like a desperate, messy cleanup job where every cleared room is a small victory.
