Xexyz came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by Hudson Soft. It was one of those late-era NES games that tried to blend genres, a time when developers were getting more comfortable with the hardware and willing to experiment. You don't hear about it as much as the big franchises, but it had its own strange charm.
You control Apollo, a warrior trying to save the floating islands of Xexyz from an alien invasion. The game constantly shifts between side-scrolling platforming stages, where you jump across gaps and use a sword and various special weapons, and horizontal shooter sections where you pilot a hoverbike through waves of enemy fire. Your main goal is to explore these areas, defeat bosses, and collect the four sacred orbs to open the path to the final confrontation. The pacing is uneven, with some brutally difficult shooter segments followed by more manageable exploration, and the shop system lets you buy odd upgrades between levels. It feels like a patchwork of ideas that somehow holds together through sheer weirdness.
