Play Yokoyama Mitsuteru Sangokushi (Japan) Online
Pick a warlord and carve out your piece of ancient China—outmaneuver spearmen in the woods, recruit legendary officers, and try not to get flattened by Lu Bu’s cavalry. Those chunky manga sprites make every battle feel like a lost 90s anime episode.

Game Overview
Yokoyama Mitsuteru Sangokushi is one of those deep-cut SNES strategy games that never made it out of Japan, which is a shame because it's got this great manga-style take on the whole Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga. The sprites are chunky and colorful, like they jumped straight out of a 90s anime—way more personality than your typical dry historical sim.
You start off picking your warlord (I always go for Cao Cao because he's got the best stats, but Liu Bei's crew has that underdog charm) and then it's all about managing territories, recruiting officers, and trying not to get steamrolled by Lu Bu. The battles play out on this grid map where positioning matters way more than brute force—I learned that the hard way when my cavalry got wrecked by spearmen in the woods.
It's not as complex as some of Koei's other strategy games, but that actually makes it easier to just jump into. The music's got these hype battle themes that kick in at just the right moments too. If you can track down a fan translation, it's a solid pick for Three Kingdoms fans who want something lighter than Dynasty Warriors but with more flair than Nobunaga's Ambition.
