Game Overview
Youkaidou is one of those GBA games that slipped under the radar for most folks—probably because it never left Japan. But if you dig RPGs with a creepy twist, this one’s a treat. You start off in some foggy mountain village where everything feels just a little off, and before long, you’re bumping into yokai straight out of old folktales. The battles are turn-based but quick, and half the fun is figuring out which weird spirit does what (that umbrella monster? way more dangerous than it looks).
The pixel art nails that eerie, washed-out look—like an old woodblock print come to life—and the music? All twangy shamisen and sudden drum hits that make you jump. It’s got that indie RPG vibe before indie RPGs were even a thing. Not gonna lie, some of the translations are rough if you’re playing a fan patch, but that almost adds to the charm. Perfect for when you want something darker than Pokémon but not as punishing as, say, Shin Megami Tensei.
Just maybe keep the lights on while playing. Those yokai designs stick with you.
